Snowflake Products FAQ

What is a preserved snowflake?

A preserved snowflake is a real snow crystal that has been permanently stabilized so its delicate structure can last for years instead of melting in seconds.
Each snowflake is collected during snowfall and under unique atmospheric conditions, no two snowflakes are ever the same, they are preserved using a special process.

Are these real snowflakes?

YES.
Every snowflake used in our pieces is a real snow crystal collected during snowfall in Manitoba. They are gathered carefully during ideal weather conditions and preserved before they melt.

How are the snowflakes preserved?

See the science behind preserving snowflakes page for this information.

Why do some preserved snowflakes contain tiny bubbles?

Occasionally small bubbles may appear in preserved snowflake pieces. These can form naturally during the curing process when the materials used to preserve the snowflake harden around the crystal structure. Small air pockets or vapor releases during the chemical reaction can sometimes become trapped.
Snowflakes themselves also contain microscopic air spaces that create small bubbles when sealed. These bubbles are a normal part of the preservation process and do not affect the preserved snowflake

Where are your snowflakes collected?

Our snowflakes are collected during winter storms in Manitoba, Canada.

Are the snowflakes fragile?

The preserved snowflake itself has been stabilized into a permanent polymer structure. However like any jewelry or artwork, pieces should be handled with care. The snowflake is protected within resin or a jewelry setting, but rough handling or impact could damage the surrounding materials.

Will my snowflake melt?

No. See the science behind preserving snowflakes for more information on the process.

Do preserved snowflakes last forever?

While no material lasts forever, preserved snowflakes can last for many years or even decades when properly cares for. The preservation polymers and resin used in our pieces are designed to remain clear and stable.

How should I care for my jewelry or artwork?

To keep piece looking its best:
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and water
❅ Remove before swimming or showering
Do not leave piece in extreme heat
Store jewelry in a dry place when its not being worn
Clean gently with a soft cloth
The metal components used in our jewelry are primarily stainless steel or silver plated, and the snowflake is sealed in resin or a protective coating.

Are the metals used in your jewelry hypoallergenic?

Most of our pieces are made using stainless steel or silver plated components, which are generally well tolerated by most people.
As Aurora Creation grows, we hope to expend into additional metal and materials in the future.

How many snowflakes does it take to make one piece?

Due to snowflakes being so fragile, multiple snowflakes must often be collected before on successfully survives the entire preservation process. Some of our pieces use multiple snowflakes from one snowfall for one piece.
Each preserved snowflakes that makes it through the process is incredibly special.

Are your pieces one of a kind?

Yee, because every snowflake is unique and each piece is handmade, no two creations will ever be exactly the same.

Why do some snowflakes appear more visible than others?

Snowflakes are naturally transparent structures. Their visibility depends on how light interacts with the crystal's tiny branches and surfaces. Some snowflakes scatter light more strongly and appear bright and detailed, while others appear more subtle and delicate. Light conditions and background colors can also affect how clearly the snowflake appears.

Will my snowflake look exactly like the photo?

While the style and design of each piece will match the listing, the exact shape of the snowflake will always be one of a kind. No two snowflakes are identical, and every preserved piece is unique.

Do you offer custom pieces?

Custom requests may occasionally be available depending on the design and season. Feel free to contact Aurora Creations to discuss custom ideas.

Do preserved snowflakes pieces come with and authenticity card?

Yes. All Aurora Creation pieces that contain preserved snowflakes include an authenticity card confirming that the snowflake in the piece is a real natural snow crystal that has been carefully collected and preserved.
The card states where the snowflake was collected, the date collected and for art pieces it includes the title and year the piece was made. Both contain a signature of the person who collected the snowflake.

Why do preserved snowflakes pieces include authentication?

Preserved snowflakes are extremely delicate and difficult to capture successfully, the authenticity card helps document that the piece contains a real preserved snowflake and confirms that it was created by Aurora Creations.

Why do preserved snowflakes feel special?

A snowflake normally exists for a moment before melting. By preserving these delicate crystals, we are able to capture a tiny piece of winter, something that once fell from the sky and turned it into a lasting piece of art.
Each snowflake is a reminder of the fleeting beauty of nature and the wonder hidden in the smallest details.
